A Message from Superintendent Jeff Baerwald

Nine Mile Falls Parents and Community Members:

Happy New Year!

We are excited to welcome students and staff back from winter break as we enter the month of January and the midway point of this school year.

Last month the Nine Mile Falls School Board launched three separate ThoughtExchanges to gather feedback and data to help guide our strategic plan. The audiences for these three exchanges were our Nine Mile Falls School District parents, staff, and students. The question for all three of these groups was similar: What do you want the experience of a student in the Nine Mile Falls School District to look like and feel like? Although our school board has not had a chance to thoroughly review all of the thoughts and data gained from this exchange, I did want to share some overarching themes that surfaced.

From this ThoughtExchange, our parents and staff members shared very similar thoughts on what they wanted a student’s school experience to look like and feel like:

Safety - both physical and emotional
A sense of belonging - engaged and connected
Academically challenged
Supported - academically, socially and emotionally
Prepared - opportunities to gain career/post-secondary experiences prior to graduating

On the student side the data was a bit different. This survey was given to students in grades 6-12. Although not all students participated, we did have about 350 student participants. The overarching themes that our students shared were:

Life skills - help prepare me to live on my own, file income taxes, etc.
Mutual respect - between students and staff
Better lunch options

In the coming months the Nine Mile Falls School Board will utilize these thoughts, along with other data, to help guide our strategic plan. A powerpoint summary of the main themes shared by parents has also been posted to our website for your review.

Finally, I would like to share that the month of January is Board Appreciation Month. This is a great time to recognize and thank our elected volunteer community members who selflessly give of their time and energy in support of all of our Nine Mile Students.

Thank you for your continued support of all things Nine Mile!
