A Message from Superintendent Jeff Baerwald

Nine Mile Falls Parents and Community Members:

The Nine Mile Falls School Board recently spent a full day together discussing all things Nine Mile. This annual “work session” is scheduled to provide time for the board to discuss and problem-solve district-related objectives and challenges. To provide additional insight to our families, the board wanted to share some of the key topics that were discussed and why.

First, your school board has tasked the district with improving our website and providing a more user-friendly tool for our family and community members. We are happy to let you know that we have started this process and are hoping to have a “new” and improved website launch later this spring.

Another item of discussion was the upcoming legislative session. As the superintendent, the school board expects me to engage with legislators and advocate on behalf of the students, families, and staff of the Nine Mile Falls School District. The school board has asked me to push against unfunded mandates and ensure our legislators understand the impact of potential legislation on our students and educational programs.

The most discussed item during the work session was about gathering parent voices to direct the district-wide strategic plan. As a result of the discussion, we launched a ThoughtExchange on November 29th for all parents. The School Board is invested in hearing your shared thoughts as we work to modify our strategic plan for the Nine Mile Falls School District. Please click on this link https://tejoin.com/scroll/938213132  to participate in the ThoughtExchange. This link will be available until the evening of December 13th.

As part of the work session, I provided the board with an update on the progress of the Facilities Advisory Committee (FAC). Last spring, the district reached out to our community for volunteers to serve as members. The FAC has met monthly since that time and is continuing to gather vital information regarding the current and future reality of our district facilities.  Specifically, the FAC has been tasked with the following:

Reviewing student enrollment projections and physical conditions of buildings

Reviewing and/or validating existing space and service standards

Forecasting the need to construct, expand, or modernize our schools

Creating a 10-year plan indicating the type of projects needed, cost, and funding sources

Conducting public forums and solicit patron input

Present findings and make a recommendation to the school board

This 15-member FAC citizens committee will present their findings and will propose a plan by spring 2023 at a public forum(s). Once we have secured a date for this feedback opportunity, we will be sure to invite our entire Nine Mile community and look forward to engaging in this conversation with you.

As always, thank you for your continued support of all things Nine Mile!
