Principal's Message

The 2007-2008 school year was filled with new challenges and great successes. We continued to implement many of the exciting and purposeful changes we have made at Lakeside Middle School. As a staff we are proud of the academic and co-curricular success our students experienced throughout the year.

In late September through early October our students began collecting pledges for our 10th Annual Fund Run. Our students collected over $15,000 in pledges. All money collected from the Fund Run is used to support all co-curricular activities at Lakeside Middle School. I would like to thank all of the students and community members who helped support us during this important fundraiser.

Throughout the school year our students successfully competed in academic and athletic competitions. Over two-thirds of our seventh and eighth graders were involved in athletics. The Lakeside Middle School band/music program had another successful year and continued to provide opportunities for students to perform in front of diverse audiences. In March we held an Evening of Excellence assembly to formally recognize all of our honor roll students. Almost 200 students were recognized for their outstanding academic accomplishments. All eighth grade students were involved in a "We the People" showcase in June, where they were judged on their expertise and knowledge of different constitutional issues.

During this past school year we continued our effort to recognize students for displaying the characteristics of the Eagle Pride Word of the Month. In conjunction with Eagle Pride we kicked off the school year with our new touchstone, "Fly the Lakeside Way." All of our students signed a pledge card and set goals around "Doing the Right Thing, Working Hard, and Being Themselves – The Lakeside Way." Throughout the school year hundreds of our students who demonstrated The Lakeside Way were recognized throughout the year with an Eagle Party Pass that allowed them to go to the front of the lunch line and also receive free ice cream. Along with the monthly Eagle Party, every month one student from each grade level was recognized by students and staff as the Student of the Month. Furthermore, many other students were recognized through their own grade level assemblies or end of the year celebrations. I would like to congratulate and thank all of our students who were recognized for Flying the Lakeside Way; they have truly made a difference at Lakeside Middle School.

In closing, the staff at Lakeside Middle School would like to thank all of you for another great year and invite you to come to Lakeside Middle School and be a part of the daily education of our students. We are looking forward to the year ahead of us and would like you to be a part of our successes and celebrations.

Sincerely,
Jeff Baerwald, Principal

School Improvement Plan

During the last few school years the staff at Lakeside Middle School has been working to continue their own professional development in order to positively impact student learning. We have utilized our professional development days, along with Thursday collaboration time, to help us achieve our goals of improving teaching and learning. We are proud of the progress we have made and will continue to work diligently to provide the best education we can to all of our students.

During the past year the staff at Lakeside Middle School introduced “The Lakeside Way” as a touchstone for what we believe helps a person develop character. “The Lakeside Way” is characterized by three main goals and a mission statement.
• Working Hard – Striving for excellence.
• Doing the Right Thing – Striving for ethical behavior.
• Being Yourself – Following your conscience instead of the crowd and striving to develop, not waste, your full potential for excellence and ethics.
At Lakeside Middle School we strive to improve the well-being of ourselves and those around us.

The staff members who have been involved in our Meaningful Learning team over the past year have shown a tremendous amount of dedication to student character development. As a group, the Meaningful Learning Team created “The Lakeside Way” in order to help students develop a stronger understanding of what a person of character is. In addition to The Lakeside Way touchstone, the Meaningful Learning Team also developed a Student of the Month program during the past school year. Each month a student at each grade level was selected as the Student of the Month based on nominations by students and staff.

Along with the changes that have been made in our character education program, the staff has also maintained a professional focus on our three building goals. The goals call for improving teaching and learning in order to improve literacy, math, and student motivation. Collaboration time throughout the year was dedicated to making progress toward meeting the goals.

The Literacy Team participated in a book study and utilized their new knowledge to identify specific reading and writing goals that need to be achieved based on current student performance. Through the identification of these goals and the help of our District Literacy Coach, they have begun to implement standardized best teaching practices in the areas of reading and writing. They continue to review the assessment data we receive from classroom, District, and State assessments to continually reevaluate and readjust their goals. Our students in all three grades performed at or above the State average on the 2007 reading WASL.

Within the mathematics program the teachers at Lakeside Middle School continue to create “backwards design” units to maintain close alignment with the state standards. With the recent change to the math standards, our teachers are working hard to align our current curriculum to the new standards. Their work on alignment and best teaching practices, along with connected math program, is continuing to help students increase their understanding in mathematics. All three grades significantly outperformed the state average on the 2007 math WASL.

Finally the staff at Lakeside Middle School would like to thank all of the parents and volunteers for their dedication to helping us make Lakeside Middle School a better place for kids.
