Principal's Message

Nine Mile Falls Elementary community members, Superintendent, staff, and parents are busy working with our project manager and a team of architects and builders.  We are laying the groundwork for our building remodel, which will begin in August 2008.  Thank you, voters, for your support of the Bond that made this work possible!

The staff configuration at Nine Mile Falls Elementary has changed some for the 2007 - 2008 school year.  Mr. Lefler returned to Lake Spokane Elementary School, and his own new portable classroom.  Mrs. Lake remains in our building to teach a fourth-fifth grade combination class.  Mrs. Hare moved from the kindergarten classroom to the first grade.

Mrs. Murphy has moved from the Learning Center to be our kindergarten teacher.  Mrs. Isakson was hired to work with our students in the Learning Center.  Mrs. French is now the Speech/Language Pathologist at both elementary schools.  Instructional aides, Mrs. Viehouser and Mrs. McLauchlin, have returned to offer Read Naturally  fluency curriculum to our students.

In-service training in use of the FOSS Science Kits for our teaching staff continues this year.  Teachers and students are thoroughly enjoying the hands-on activities and experiences with the scientific process provided by the science curriculum.

Our PTG (parent/teacher group) continues to remain active in providing financial assistance for field trips and classroom materials to enhance our students' educational opportunities.  A "fund run" last spring raised enough money to purchase document cameras and projectors for six of our nine classrooms.  Teachers and students enjoy the expanded learning options these tools provide.

"Late arrival" on each Thursday morning continues to provide opportunities for our teaching staff to meet for collaboration.  Work continues on our school-wide writing curriculum.  Teachers are able to problems solve and share ideas for better instructional delivery.  Student work can be viewed and critiqued as well.

As we move into January 2008, we are excited about the opportunities and challenges that await us.  Our desire to provide our students with a balance of academic, physical, citizenship, and creative learning opportunities continues to drive our decision making process.  We love our kids at Nine Mile Falls Elementary!

Sincerely,
Len Mortlock, Principal
