ClassroomsCare!

Mrs. Herbes' fourth graders at
Nine Mile Falls Elementary

“Reading is giving.” This motto has been put into practice at both of our elementary schools. Mrs. Rosemary Clocherty’s first grade class (Lake Spokane Elementary) and fourth graders in Mrs. Wendy Herbes’ class (Nine Mile Falls Elementary) participated in ClassroomsCare during October and November. These students read 100 books which not only strengthened their own skills, it gave kids in need 100 books!

As part of Scholastic Books Clubs literacy partnerships, ClassroomsCare challenges classrooms across the country to read 100 books by December 31st. Students can read books aloud, at home, or at school to qualify. In Mrs. Herbes’ classroom, a girl earned the honor of reading the most books, 23. “I’d go to the library and just read when I had extra time,” she explained. For Mrs. Clocherty’s class, a boy read nine books. “It feels good to help people...so kids that don’t have any money can own books. I just did the ninth one today.”

A poster is provided to chart the class’ progress. Once 100 books have been read, the Club donates 100 books to kids in need. By the end of the year up to one million books will be distributed! ClassroomsCare empowers kids to make a difference for others who are not as fortunate.
