Lakeside High School Students
Earn National Honors

Family and Consumer Science classes and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Club at Lakeside High School provide our teens opportunities to explore a variety of career choices in the hospitality/food service industry, which includes management, culinary arts, entrepreneurship, hospitality, and travel. Taught and advised by Mrs. Maureen Fanion, the classes and the club offer competitions for students to showcase their skills. As high school freshmen last year, three Lakeside High School students qualified to compete in the FCCLA Nationals held in Anaheim, California this past July. They competed in the Junior Division against seventh, eighth, and ninth graders from 38 schools. Their category for the competition was Entrepreneurship.

During the 2006 - 2007 school year, the three young ladies managed and operated the coffee/espresso stand at the high school. For the competition, they used this experience to write the Business Plan that was submitted. This plan followed an exact format which included seven detailed sections. It simulated what a entrepreneur would submit to a bank when seeking a small business loan. Our students received the “Top Gold Award,” or first place for their work!

Also at the competition were two 2007 graduates. They qualified as seniors last year for the Iron Chef portion of the FCCLA National Competition. Our two students were challenged to prepare a four course meal in one hour; they had no idea of the menu until the event began. For this section, six to seven chefs from all over the Anaheim area judged Olga and Nick on Safety/Sanitation, Food Preparation Technique, Presentation, and Taste. They earned the “Top Silver” for their efforts.

The combinations of competitions, classes, and FCCLA offer both the work experience and the classroom learning needed to succeed. Our students were able to take their “book knowledge” and apply it in a real world experience. This provides them with practical experience that ensures a positive start to promising careers.
