Superintendent's Message

Dear Community,

Spring is such a busy time in our District. Spring sports have begun at both Lakeside Middle School and Lakeside High School. We currently have over 150 and over 300 kids participating in spring sports at LMS and LHS, respectively. The research is clear that when students are involved in school activities, it translates to higher academic achievement. In addition to athletics, we also have 25 to 30 students participating in an after school extended day program at Lakeside Middle School. This is an opportunity for students to get help with homework, do school work for the first hour, and then engage in an activity for the last hour. We are able to provide bussing for these students as well.

Our schools have been busy completing the state testing (Washington Assessment of Student Learning) in grades 3,4,5,6,7,8, and 10). A big thank you goes to Debbie Lahue, our Director of Learning and Assessment, for helping each building administrator have all the information and coordination necessary to make this a successful experience for teachers and students. Students have been working diligently to “show what they know.” The results will provide us feedback into our programs and be helpful in guiding our work.
We also have been actively engaged in the planning process for our construction projects at Lake Spokane Elementary and Nine Falls Mile Elementary. Please see the Construction Update article (page 3) in this edition of the Eye on Education for more details.

With spring conferences and the WASL behind us and Memorial Day ahead, it feels that we are in the “homestretch.” Thank you for your commitment to the students of Nine Mile Falls School District. It is a privilege for us to be a part of creating the best surroundings and the best experiences for our students. Our commitment to the success and achievement of our kids in all areas happens day in and day out in each of our buildings. This commitment is made not only by teachers, staff, and administrators, but parents and the community as well. If you have questions, please feel free to contact me at 340-4040 or blewis@9mile.org.
