Skills that Save!
Each student at Lakeside Middle School has the opportunity to become certified in both First Aid and CPR as a part of their Health classes. Mrs. Kathey Weiss, health instructor, prepares her students for certification with a week long curriculum, brushing up First Aid skills. In the eighth grade, CPR is added to the course. Community member and local Fireman Russ Armstrong performs the exams, and the students are certified by him through the American Red Cross. “These are skills that every individual needs to be current on, as the medical field is always improving how we render First Aid, as well as recently updating CPR from the 15/2 to the new 30/2 compressions and breaths,” stated Mrs. Weiss. “I feel very fortunate to be able to have every kid go through this program here at the middle school and to be able to offer them a lifelong skill that can help people, not only within their immediate family, but in the community as well. With all the sports and activities kids participate in each day, these skills are so important to know.” In addition, Mrs. Weiss has a wall display of x-rays from either students or the general public, which show different breaks and dislocations. The students go straight to her room if they render any kind of injury with x-ray in hand to show her. “I love to see the kids put their knowledge into action. I hate to see them get hurt, but to know that they can handle situations with care sure makes, not only the injured more confident and calm, but the first aid provider as well!” |
