| Election Certified on November 27:
The Nine Mile Falls School District is proud to announce its new School Board Directors. With the election certified on November 27, Cori Reeves, Debbie Williams, and Kyle Yancey will be our new Directors. They will be sworn in at the December 19th School Board Meeting. Cori is a long time member of the Nine Mile community. She and her husband of 24 years, Mark, have two grown sons; Grant is married with two children and Cody, who went through our School District Kindergarten through 12th grade, is a sophomore at the Falls. “I love kids and am excited to serve this community by helping our school system improve,” she commented. Her father instilled a sense of “giving back” to the community, and this in part is why she sought the position. At the recent Washington State School Directors Association Conference (WSSDA), Cori learned that while the Directors do not always have to agree and can vote in opposition, once the vote is taken and the issue/policy decided, they must act as a team and support what has been decided. As a Board, they will be looking at ways to get measurable community input, with many ideas regarding this gleaned from the conference. Kyle is a 2001 Lakeside High School graduate who attended Nine Mile Falls Elementary, then our middle school and high school. He served the high school as the Student School Board Representative his junior and senior year, as well as being the ASB President his senior year. He presently is a Real Estate Agent, an Emergency Medical Technician, and is attending SCC to get his Paramedic Certificate. He chose to run for the School Board, “Because I love Nine Mile and would like to have my kids go here when I have them. I would like to be part of the process of laying a good foundation for this School District, which means finding an outstanding Superintendent,” he shared. At the WSSDA conference, he felt that learning about the budget (local, state, and federal monies) will be most beneficial to him in his new role. “I’m excited to develop ways for more people to be involved in our school district, people without kids in the schools. We learned about some ways to get more of our community involved at the conference.” Debbie has two children in our District, one at the middle school and one at Lake Spokane Elementary. The family has resided in Suncrest since 1994. What impressed her the most about the WSSDA conference was the compassion and intelligence of the Superintendents, Board Members, and teachers state-wide who presented. “Often times as a parent you hear negative comments, but hearing the presenters talk, they are really looking at test scores and ways to improve education in the state of Washington.” Time commitment was another area she found enlightening, “It’s not just a ‘once a month’ meeting.” Debbie decided to run for the School Board to help in the decision making process of improving academic excellence for all students. She plans on researching each issue and to base her decision on what is best for the majority. Our School Board is comprised of five members who are elected by the public to serve a four year term. They represent the community in setting goals and policies for the School District. The Superintendent and the District staff are responsible for the execution of the goals and policies. The Board has final control over local school matters within the laws of the Legislature and the regulations of the State Board of Education. These volunteers are committed to improving student learning and the overall educational process within Nine Mile Falls. |
