Math Is Cool

The two top fifth grade scorers
from each elementary school.

Fifth grade students in our District showed their mathematical acumen during Math Is Cool competitions. Teams competed in open-ended problem sets, relays, pressure rounds, and college bowl rounds. Students who competed in the individual rounds faced multiple choice and open-ended problem sets. In addition to Spokane, Regional Math Is Cool competitions are held in Moses Lake and Seattle.

The Regional fifth grade Math is Cool was held April 20 at Mt. Spokane High School. Our 5th graders from both elementaries represented our District well; Nine Mile Elementary’s team placed fifth out of 30 teams. One student took third place honors, with his teammate placing eighth on the individual test out of about 120 participants! From there four students were selected by the team’s coach, Mrs. Barb McCray, to participate in the Master competition on May 19th. They placed 11th in the statewide event.

The State Master’s Competition was May 19, also at Mt. Spokane High School. The 4th grade Lake Spokane Math Club was represented and the team had a super day, with one student placing 7th among Division II (two) 4th grade participants from all of Washington State!!

For the first time in Math is Cool history, the Nine Mile Falls School District was represented at every grade level (4th, 5th, and 6th) at the Master’s Competition. We should be proud to have so many students who enjoy challenging math, as well as parents who encourage and support them.
