Fantastic Friends!

One fifth grader
gets ready
to catch his egg!

Food, games, prizes, and friends...what could be more fantastic? Fifth graders from both elementary schools have had fantastic fun this year due to Mr. Lou Gattman’s efforts. As some fifth graders from Suncrest attended Nine Mile Falls Elementary this year, Mr. Gattman, planned three, three hour events to get the friends together and to assist the students with the transition to middle school next year. The last event was held at Sontag Park on Tuesday, June 12, with both the PTN from Lake Spokane and the PTG from Nine Mile helping with a monetary donation.

One young lady has attended all three Fantastic Friends. “I really like it ‘cause you get to hang out with your friends that went to Nine Mile,” she explained. “I’ve also met new ‘peeps.’ ” This last event consisted of field games, board and card games, and just, as the fifth grader described, hanging out. Another fifth grader particularly liked the egg toss, “The egg hit me in the face, and it was pretty cool!” Mr. Gattman was assisted by eight parent volunteers from both schools. Hot dogs, chips, and ice cream bars were the fare for the Fantastic Friends.

To wrap up the day, a special game was played; each student was given a number. A corresponding number was placed in a bucket Every ten seconds a number was selected from the bucket. When a student’s number was called out, s/he could come to the “prize table” and select a prize. The longer a student, shopped, the greater the chance of a prize being snatched by someone else! This way, every student in attendance, all 75, took home a prize from Fantastic Friends!
