Dear Community,

Nine Mile Falls Elementary wants to thank each and every one of you for the support you have shown the school this year in the absence of our principal, Mr. Len Mortlock. He, Mr. Mortlock, also wants to be sure that you know how much he has appreciated your continued thoughts and prayers as his family went through a most traumatic school year.

The staff at Nine Mile kept themselves involved in professional growth through many activities this school year. Our regular Thursday morning collaborative times were spent in a variety of activities. We spent several days working on writing and hope to see a continued rise in our writing assessment scores. We had several collaborative meetings that were held with the staff at Lake Spokane Elementary. In these meetings, the primary staff was working to align the reading curriculum between the schools, while the intermediate staff was working on math.

The new FOSS Science Kits are proving to be very valuable in helping our students to experience science in their daily life, and we are seeing a positive carryover effect into the area of math. Further, in the areas of math and science, we were able to bring in some guests to help with our students’ understanding. We had an assembly entitled “Math Magic,” and another assembly by the “Reptile Man.” Both of these assemblies were entertaining as well as educational. The Science Fair, that only involved fourth and fifth grade students this year, helped to show us how well our students understand the scientific process.

The PTG remained very active at Nine Mile and provided many fun activities for students and for families. Our annual “Breakfast with Santa” was a success, as were “Fun Day” and “Bingo Night.” The PTG sponsored a “Fund Run” in which it was their goal to raise money to purchase document cameras for some of our classrooms. Thanks to our community’s generosity they surpassed their fund raising goal.

We would also like to thank Lake Spokane Elementary for “loaning” us Mr. Lefler and Mrs. Lake to help with the extra fifth grade students who were bussed to Nine Mile because of the overcrowding at Lake Spokane Elementary.

Finally, a huge THANK YOU to the Nine Mile community for supporting the bond issue that was passed in May. The improvements that you will be seeing in the next few years will help to make your schools more safe and provide a better learning environment for your children in the coming years.

Sincerely,
Brad Lundstrom, Interim Principal
