Dear Community,

Lake Spokane believes in the power of a team. Our team consists of parents, staff, students, and community members, who all contribute to our learning environment. We appreciate and honor our team, the time and commitment each member brings to our school, and the gift it is to our kids.

There were multiple opportunities for students to be involved in curricular and co-curricular events. Over 40 students participated in our ASB program led by four officers from fifth grade. Kristen Hastings led this ASB group and enhanced their leadership role in our school. They also participated in multiple service projects throughout the year.

Once again, our Parent Teacher Network provided Lake Spokane with many opportunities for students and their families to participate in fun and engaging activities. Their goal of bringing families and the community together was met beyond all expectations. The activities were too large in number to name them all; some of the highlights were the Book Fairs, Boo Bash, Skate Nights, Talent Show, and of course, one of the favorites, the Carnival. In addition, the PTN again offered summer camps for students. This committed group of parents also continued their support of our technology resource needs. Their fund-raising efforts have afforded Lake Spokane the opportunity for more document cameras for our kids and teachers. Thank you PTN!!!

Our Thursday morning collaboration time has been an incredible asset for our learning improvement efforts. Teachers spent time aligning curriculum, discussing instructional strategies, designing curriculum, creating scope and sequences for grade level curriculum, etc. This time was a critical piece in our effort to be the best school we can be. Our Learning Teams focused on reading strategies for comprehension with nonfiction informational text, strategies for implementation of our two new math curriculums, and laying the foundation for a comprehensive writing program.

Students had opportunities to participate in our After School Gifted Program. Students were involved in Reading Clubs, Math Clubs, and a Game Strategy Club. Our fifth grade Math Club performed very well in our local competition and as a result was invited to compete at the State level where they represented our school with success. In an effort to reach all kids in the area of literacy, small groups were formed to work with those students needing additional support, and a Homework Club was also available for students needing assistance in academic areas.

Sincerely,
Bridget (Monahan) Lewis, Principal

School Improvement Plan

Lake Spokane is committed to actively pursue improvement in all areas of learning. Our School Improvement Process (SIP) engages teachers and staff in the goal of reaching all students. We use multiple forms of measure to assess our progress. Both MAP and 2007 WASL data will be used to set new goals in each area.

Currently, goals are broken down into the areas of Math, Reading, Writing, and Science. In an effort to support each of these areas, Lake Spokane teachers are divided into four Learning Teams, one for each of these areas. These teams are used to develop new strategies for each area and communicate them to the entire staff. Students, staff, parents, and community members all play a critical role in our mission of continual improvement.

We held a WASL night in March to help parents understand the expectations and standards for this important assessment. Grade Level teams worked together during collaboration time to align curriculum, discuss effective strategies, and plan for consistent implementation of academic programs and expectations. Significant collaboration time was used to work together with Nine Mile Elementary teachers in the areas of reading and math instruction.

Our endeavors for the 2006-2007 school year included such things as:
• Utilize our Literacy Coach for staff development in the area of writing and implement a building-wide writing assessment.
• Analyze our testing results to determine the most strategic approach for learning improvement.
• Support the further development of collaborative teams called Critical Friends Groups.
• Continue our dialogue around consistent math instruction.
• Increase our Talented and Gifted program offerings.
