Welcome
ASL 1 & 2
ASL 1 is an introductory course which explores the language, culture and history of deafness in America. In so doing, we also consider the efficacy of American Sign Language versus verbalization to convey a message. Can it as ably communicate technical and abstract ideas as it does concrete information? And to what degree?
ASL 2 provides opportunities to meet and learn from Deaf individuals in person and via videotape/teleconferencing to aid students in their understanding of deafness and Deaf culture. Off campus events and activity participation will be greatly encouraged with attendance at several being required.
Careers using sign language will also be a consideration of these courses. We will not only take a look at the requirements to become a professional interpreter for the Deaf, but numerous other professions that make use of the ability to sign.
